Submission Guidelines

The Maritime Awareness Project (MAP) welcomes unsolicited submissions to its Analysis series. The MAP platform promotes original research on maritime issues—particularly research taking advantage of GIS data and visualizations—for audiences around the world. MAP is a unique policy-focused fusion of data and analysis that goes beyond narratives and headlines. The website is designed to attract a wide readership, from policy-makers to students, and hopes to foster discussion among different national perspectives on shared maritime challenges.

The MAP website is supported by the National Bureau of Asian Research and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA, and features an international panel of experts. The website is intended as an educational and informational public resource.

Submissions should be sent to [email protected].

Please keep the following guidelines in mind:

    • In its initial (current) phase, the MAP website is primarily focused on issues in East Asia. Submissions on subjects outside this region will be considered, but priority will be given to pieces on the South and East China Seas. In the next phase of the development,  new regions will be added to the MAP platform and the focus of the Analysis section will broaden.
    • Submissions should be between 1,000 and 1,200 words in length, unless specifically discussed with the MAP project team. MAP will not publish speculative analysis.
    • Priority will be given to original analysis, although republication may be considered. If your essay has appeared, been published, or been presented elsewhere—in part or in entirety—please note this and any other relevant information with your submission.
    • If an article includes or requires creation of an original data layer for display on the Interactive Map, it is best that such a proposal be broached early with the MAP team.
    • All citations should be provided as a hyperlink in the text of the article.
    • The MAP team reserves the right to select pieces for publication based on quality, timeliness, originality, and relevance. The MAP team will respond to all ideas and proposals in a timely manner.
    • We kindly request that you do not submit a draft to both MAP and another publication at the same time.
    • If your article is selected for publication, you will have an opportunity to review feedback from the editors prior to publication.
